Residency Training - Children's & Women's Health Centre of British Columbia

Dr.  Derryck Smith, Head, Department of Psychiatry

Children's & Women's Health Centre of British Columbia is the tertiary care pediatric hospital for the Province of British Columbia.  Following are the programs which are part of the Department's services:

  • A ten-bed Inpatient Unit for children aged 12 and under.
  • A ten-bed Adolescent Psychiatry Unit for teenagers aged 13 to 17.
  • A Psychiatric Assessment Unit with three beds for children and youth in crises (CAPE).
  • A consultation service for the medical and surgical beds in the hospital.
  • Extensive Outpatient Department including a General Clinic and Specialty Clinics in Urgent Assessment, Mood Disorders, ADHD, Infant Psychiatry, Neuropsychiatry and SUDs.
  • A fully resourced Eating Disorders Program including a 9 space inpatient unit, a 10 space day treatment program and an Outpatient Department.

The Department is actively involved in province-wide Outreach and provides clinical and educational
services to a wide variety of communities around British Columbia.  The policies of the Department are
guided by a provincial-wide Advisory Committee consisting of the Directors of Regional Services for
Child and Mental Health, two members of school boards in British Columbia, a variety of representatives from the Ministry for Children and Families, and representation from the medical community.  The
Department functions on an integrated team model and includes professionals with training in Psychiatry,
Psychology, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Assessment, child care work and educators.

We are in the process of moving to a new building (June 2006) and are in the process of a major planning exercise that will substantially increase our resources, both beds and OPD space.

We are strongly committed to teaching and have won awards for the last 5 years for resident and undergraduate teaching.
