Software

Software

Contact Technical Support before installing or removing any software from your computer. Technical Support installs software and security patches and maintains security settings, based on our record of installed software. Generally, software is licensed for installation on one computer. You do not own the software. Some software is available through campus licencing (http://www.it.ubc.ca/software.html), for computers on our network, at greatly reduced prices.  Please contact us for details.

Windows 7

Windows 7 Professional is our current standard operating system.  It will be activated, when you receive your computer, but must check in with the UBC KMS server to remain active.  Please see Microsoft KMS Activation, below.

Following are links to help you get started with Windows 7;

Windows Vista

Introduced by Microsoft in April 2008 and installed on Departmental computers from February 2009 to September 2010.  Some home users have been unhappy with Windows Vista, primarily due to some of it's new security features.  We have pre-configured these features to secure Vista computers and save you the frustration.  This leaves you with only the advantages, which include a superior search and indexing system.  You'll find that after clicking the Start button (lower left corner), you are able to search for files, programs, e-mail and bookmarks, very quickly.  Most of the Department's Windows Vista computers are eligable for a free upgrade to Windows 7.  Please contact us if you would like to schedule an upgrade.  There are lots of tips at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/help/using to help you get going with it.

Windows XP

This is the oldest version of Windows, that we currently support.  It was introduced by Microsoft on December, 2001 and it's last major Service Pack (SP3) was released in May 2008.  Any computers without Service Pack 3, after July 13, 2010, will not be supported by us and will no longer have access to D_Psychiatry resources, including networked printers,  P: and U: drive.

Microsoft ended Mainstream support in April 2009 and will cease Extended support as of April 2014 but new software releases will stop working with it, as early as 2012.  Please plan on replacing these computers within the next few years.  We will not be supporting them once Microsoft cuts their support.

Internet Explorer

We currently support Internet Explorer 8 only.  All older versions must be upgraded.  We are happy to install Firefox, upon your request.  Other web browsers such as Google Chrome and Opera are not permitted, due to security and support issues.

Microsoft Office 2010 Pro Plus

Office 2010 is the standard version on all new computers.  We can upgrade older MS Office versions to Office 2007 or 2010, for free, provided your computer has enough free hard drive space and sufficent RAM.

It will be activated, when we install it on your computer, but must check in with the UBC KMS server to remain active.  Please see Microsoft KMS Activation, below.

The user interface has undergone its largest change, since Office for Windows was introduced.  For most, it takes a few days to learn the new interface, then you'll find it faster to use.  Following are links to help you get started with Office 2007;

Microsoft Office 2007 Pro

Office 2007 has the most significant change of user interface, since Microsoft Office was first published for Windows computers.  The context sensitive ribbon bar is quite effective, but will take you a bit of time to learn.  There are many tutorials available on the web, particularly at www.microsoft.com

Microsoft Office 2003

This is the oldest version of MS Office, that we support.  Starting in July 2010, all UBC Interchange e-mail accounts will be converted to Exchange 2007 accounts.  Once the conversions are complete, the Interchange e-mail servers will be shut-down.  Once your e-mail account has been converted, it will no-longer be accessible with Outlook XP (2002) or Outlook 2003.  You will need to either upgrade Office/Outlook versions or use webmail.

SPSS Statistics

We stopped licensing SPSS Statistics Net (networked version) in November 2011.  We can install a stand-alond version of SPSS statistics for $200 per fiscal year (April to March).  No pro-rating of the price is available.

GraphPad Prism

Your program may have GraphPad Prism 5 (networked version) installed, on your computer. Two people can use it, at one time. Please be courteous and close Prism, if you are not actively using it. This is the cheapest way to access this software. Please contact us, if you would like access to it.

Microsoft KMS Activation

Software requiring KMS activation (currently MS Windows 7 and Office 2010) will check with the UBC KMS server every 7 days and renew their lease.  This is only possible while connected to our wired network..Af lease renewal does not occour within 180 days, you will get reminders for 30 days.  If  lease renewal doesn't happen after the 30 day reminder period, your software will stop working.
