To be the leading academic Department of Psychiatry in Canada which is internationally recognized in Psychiatry, Addictions and Neuroscience

• Promote and support partnerships to improve teaching, research opportunities and clinical care

1. Increase our commitment to clinical research
• Establish a resident research stream and a clinician scientist training program
• Give priority to recruitment of clinician scientists for vacant chair, faculty and leadership positions
• Mentor and develop clinical researchers among our junior faculty
• Develop a research investigator stream for clinical faculty
2. Enhance clinical care through translation of science into practice
• Build our outstanding Division of Basic Neuroscience with recruitment, retention, resources and space allocation
• Enrich undergraduate and postgraduate curricula with new knowledge in neuroscience
• Work to establish the Centre for Brain Health on the UBC campus
• Promote evidence based practice in all areas of patient care including addictions and special populations like children and the elderly
3. Enhance our educational programs and build capacity to develop exceptional teachers
• Increase the number of top ranked applicants to our residency and fellowship programs
• Ensure the quality of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in distributed sites
• Focus on faculty development in the areas of teaching skills and educational scholarship
• Develop opportunities for graduate training of clinical researchers

• Continue to work with BCMHAS and regional health authorities on joint academic and clinical appointments and leadership roles
• Become a leader in addictions and concurrent disorders
• Focus our international collaborations with partners integral to our community, i.e. China and India
• Deliver training programs in community and cross-cultural settings
• Address the health of the urban poor with mental illness and addictions
